The inspiration for my work comes from audio recordings I make in environments ranging from a decaying beach building to a tiled boxing gym or stone floored keeping cellar. The acoustic identity of these spaces is like a fingerprint and although there are sometimes similarities, no two spaces are the same. To represent the sound of an enclosed space visually, I examine the recordings’ waveforms at a granular magnification until that unique personality is condensed down to a series of overlapping lines and impulses. At this level and in layered forms and colours, the acoustic properties of the interior of a humble wardrobe are just as beautiful as its cathedral counterpart. The age and species of the timber, the years of wax and dust all affect the reverberations and auditory personality of the confines. The reflective qualities of a tiled stairwell in a city apartment block are very different from the absorbent materials found in a much-loved drawing room filled with a lifetime of ephemera. Ultimately I aim to represent all the character and life of the object or enclosure in a visual format.
The selection of works here display a variety of recordings taken as I travel and committed to canvas or timber on return to my studio in Yorkshire.
